Tehran, IRNA – The poor performance of Iran’s freestyle wrestling team in the 2023 Asian Wrestling Championship will be scrutinized soon, according to a spokesman of the Iranian Wrestling Federation.

Mohammad-Ebrahim Emami said on Saturday that the federation, like all sports enthusiasts in the country, is dissatisfied with the “unexpected” performance of the team.

Bagging one gold and three bronze medals, Iran stood in third place in the 2023 Asian Wrestling Championship competitions, held in Astana, Kazakhstan, from 9 to 14 April.

Kazakhstan with 179 points and Japan with 129 points ranked first and second, respectively, while Iran received 124 points.

“Immediately after the return of the national freestyle wrestling team from Kazakhstan, the unexpected results of the freestyle wrestlers will be examined in a meeting attended by the officials of the federation and the technical staff,” Emami said.

He added that the conclusions of the meeting will be publicized afterward.

The spokesman also said the federation “will always welcome expert opinions and constructive criticisms that are accompanied by logical solutions and suggestions.”
