Tehran, IRNA – Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian on Thursday met with Leader of the Supreme Islamic Iraqi Council Humam Hamoudi as part of his visit to the Iraqi capital.

The Iranian foreign minister congratulated the Iraqi official on the formation of a new government in the country, appreciating his efforts to help create consensus in the formation of the government.

Amirabdollahian noted that a speedy resolution to the issue of Iraq’s overdue debts to Iran can be helpful for the future of economic exchanges between the two neighboring countries.

The Iraqi official, for his part, said that formation of the Supreme Islamic Iraqi Council is a memory of the late Imam Khomeini and support from Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

Until 10 years after the fall of the former dictator Saddam Hussein, Iraq did not have real independence due to the US military occupation, civil war and the emergence of Daesh, Hamoudi said, adding that the country is gradually moving towards independence.

He said that economic exchanges between the two countries and Iraq’s gas and electricity imports from Iran are of special significance.

The official believed that it is Iran’s rightful demand to ask for the settlement of overdue debts.
