Tehran, IRNA – Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei says that the January 1978 uprising that began in the holy city of Qom was the beginning of a big Jihad that stopped “dear Iran” from being eaten by the West.

The Supreme Leader made the remarks in a meeting held in Tehran on Monday morning with the people of Qom to mark the city's uprising that took place on the 19th of Dey, 1356 (January 9, 1978), to protest an article against Imam Khomeini published on 7 January 1978 in Ettela'at newspaper.

The Qom uprising could revive the historical identity of Iran, Ayatollah Khamenei noted.

He went on to say that the 1978 uprising could pull out Iran from the wrong culture of the West and let the country become independent.

Qom uprising is the historical identity of Iran, Islam, and Islamic Iran, the Supreme Leader underlined.

The demonstration in Qom started on January 8 and lasted for three days, with its peak on the second day.

The Supreme Leader said that reliance of the Pahlavi regime on the US was the main reason of its insane act to publish a heinous article against Imam Khomeini.

Referring to the very high influence of the US in the Pahlavi regime, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution said that the people's fight against this regime was actually a fight against the United States.

Speed in feeling duty, taking risks, and a timely and undoubted move were the main features of the 1978 uprising of Qom people, Ayatollah Khamenei said, adding that any move with these features will reach its goals.

The Supreme Leader stressed that the US has been seeking to deal a blow to the Islamic system over the past 43 years with propaganda being the main tool of their enmity against Iran.

Ayatollah Khamenei also referred to "propaganda" as one of the main strategies enemies have used against Iran in the recent unrest across the country, emphasizing the importance of "jihad of elaboration" as the way to overcome such propaganda.

“The most important tool that the enemy used in these unrests was propaganda and the enticement of people through cyberspace and the Western, Arabic and Hebrew media,” the Supreme Leader said.

“Some made it seem as though those present in the riots were against the country’s administrative and economical weaknesses, while on the contrary, their goal was not to eliminate the weaknesses, but to destroy the country’s strengths," Ayatollah Khamenei added.
