Tehran, IRNA – The Iranian government has appointed a new governor for the southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan.

Mohammad Karami was appointed as the governor of Sistan and Baluchestan on Sunday after the Iranian Cabinet approved a proposal by the country’s minister of interior.

During the cabinet session, President Ebrahim Raisi appreciated former provincial governor Hossein Modarres Khiabani for efforts he made over more than a year for development of Sistan and Baluchestan, a relatively impoverished province located on the border with Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Karami has served as a senior commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps’ Ground Forces in southeastern Iran.
