Tabriz, IRNA - An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale shook Khoy County in northwestern Iranian province of West Azarbaijan while the tremor was also felt in the nearby counties early on Wednesday.

According to the Seismological Center affiliated to Institute of Geophysics of Tehran University, the quake occurred at 03:51 hours local time (0021 GMT.)

The tremor was at a depth of 10 km.

People of Tabriz, the capital city of northwestern province of East Azarbaijan, had thought that the center of the quake was their city so they left their home and poured into the streets with fear.

Meanwhile, the center of the today quake was Khoy.

Further, 20 aftershocks followed the main earthquake just 10 minutes later.

Rescue teams have been dispatched to the scene.
