Shamkhani made the remarks in a meeting with Secretary of Security Council of Azerbaijan Ramil Usubov.
Referring to close civilizational, historical, religious and cultural commonalities between the two countries, he stressed developing relations with Azerbaijan an important part of Iran’s foreign policy.
Arrogant powers and ill-wishers of the two nations should not be allowed to harm the fraternal relations between the two countries, he added.
Pointing to the continuation of the Zionist regime’s wickedness, which is aimed at infiltrating the security mechanisms of the region, he said that the Zionist regime, as the main center of evil-doing and insecurity in the region, is now facing political crises and internal economic and social challenges and is trying to reduce internal pressures by transferring internal crises to the region.
Iran is against any action that leads to insecurity and change in the geopolitics of the region, Shamkhani stressed.
He noted that all-out political, economic, cultural, security and defense cooperation between Tehran and Baku are in the interest of the two counties.
Meanwhile, Usubov termed lasting security and stability in the region as one of the important priorities of Iran and Azerbaijan.
He hoped for Shamkhani's visit to be a turning-point in bilateral relations and solving some issues in this regard.
He emphasized the importance of efforts to fight terrorism, organized crime and drug trafficking.
The common borders of Iran and Azerbaijan should always be safe and become a symbol of friendship between the two countries.
Past experiences show that the only way to create sustainable security is close cooperation between the regional states, he stated.
