Tehran, IRNA – Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs Faisal Mekdad said on Saturday that Damascus supports Iran’s stance in the course of nuclear talks with the world powers to lift the sanctions imposed on Tehran, according to Syria’s official SANA news agency.

Mekdad made the remarks in Damascus airport where he accorded welcome to his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amirabdollahian.

He said that the visit to Damascus by Amirabdollahian is of special significance as he said the visit follows a range of developments in Syria, in the region, and internationally.

The Iranian foreign minister, for his part, said that a recent visit to Iran by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was a turning point in bilateral relations.

He noted that Tehran-Damascus relations have entered a new phase in all areas.

Amirabdollahian referred to a Zionist attack on Syria earlier in the day and said that the Zionist regime aims to depict Damascus as an unsafe city so as to impede the return of refugees to Syria.

The Iranian foreign minister arrived in the Syrian capital on Saturday morning.
