Wang Chang said that China voted against the resolution proposed by the US and three European countries at the meeting of the IAEA BoG, adding that such a confrontational move at the IAEA board meeting will only compromise the Iran-IAEA cooperation and undermine the negotiations on reviving JCPOA, which is in the final critical stage.
The Chinese envoy said that China supports the IAEA and Iran in resolving their disagreements on safeguards issues through dialogue and cooperation.
He said that the pressing task now is to conclude the Vienna nuclear talks and bring the JCPOA back on track soon, adding that China believes all of Iran's safeguards issues will be solved by then.
Wang noted that the US, as the initiator of the current crisis, should make political decisions as soon as possible and actively respond to Iran's legitimate concerns.
All relevant parties should create the necessary conditions and a good atmosphere for diplomatic efforts, he added.
The IAEA’s Board of Governors on Wednesday (June 8, 2022) adopted a resolution against Iran, which was drafted by the United States and its three European allies, the UK, Germany, and France.
According to a tweet by Mikhail Ulyanov, the Russian ambassador to Vienna-based international organizations, Russia and China voted against the resolution.
India, Libya, and Pakistan abstained, while the rest of the 35-member Board of Governors voted in favor.
The resolution has expressed concern over the presence of nuclear material at three undeclared Iranian sites, demanding the country fully cooperate with the IAEA.
The resolution also calls on Iran to act on an urgent basis to fulfill its legal obligations and take up immediately the IAEA director-general’s offer of further engagement to clarify and resolve all outstanding safeguards issues.
Tehran has already warned against the anti-Iran resolution and promised a proportionate response.
Russian Representative Ulyanov had warned against the resolution too.
Prior to the voting at the Board of Governors, he said that the measure will increase tensions with Tehran.
