Zvezda Russian state-owned nationwide TV network broadcast a documentary on Friday to explain chronology of Iran-Russia ties in three decades and the onset of cooperation between the nations following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Referring to a letter written by the Founder of the Islamic Republic the late Imam Khomeini to the former president of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev in January 1989, a Russian presenter showed a copy of the Persian letter, noting that cooperation between Iran and the Soviet Union was emphasized in this document.
A few months after the letter by late founder of the Islamic Revolution, a turning point happened in Iran-Soviet Union ties, when the then Iranian president visited Moscow and the two countries signed an agreement on different arenas such as transportation, fisheries, electricity power-plant and iron melting company.
According to the Russian TV, it is obvious that all these collaborations have been unpleasant in the eyes of the Western powers; so, Moscow halted implementation of agreements with Iran following the collapse of the Soviet Union in order to receive financial aids by the West in the beginning of 1990s.
Tehran and Moscow resumed expanded cooperation after signing a 20-year agreement in 2001, the media reported, noting that the 2001 Treaty on the Basis of Mutual Relations and Principles of Cooperation between Iran and Russia turned to 20 years on March 12, 2021, and that the treaty has been described as a turning point in mutual ties between the two nations.
The Russia TV further reported that the 20-year agreement between Iran and Russia is expected to be signed during President Raisi’s visit to Moscow.
