Chabahar, IRNA – Export of commodities from Chabahar Port in Iran's southeastern Sistan and Baluchestan Province increased more than 100 percent at the end of the last Iranian year (March 20, 2021) compared to a couple of years before at the time when the country was targeted by US-imposed sanctions.

According to statistics of the Islamic Republic of Iran's Customs Administration (IRICA), 130,000 tons of goods worth 19.2 million dollars were exported via Chabahar port at the end of 1399 (March 21, 2020-March 20, 2021), showing a 100 percent increase in comparison to 1397 (March 21, 2018-March 20, 2019). This amount shows also more than 500 percent jump in comparison to 1396 (March 21, 2017-March 20, 2018).

Exports from Chabahar stood at 2 million dollars and 10 million dollars respectively in the Iranian years of 1396 and 1397.

Some 339 million dollars of commodities were imported via Chabahar port in 1399, indicating 400 percent increase comparing to 1397.

Pakistan, India, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Thailand, Iraq, Malaysia, Somalia, Armenia, and China were the major destinations of Iran’s exports via Chabahar Port.

The port has also been used for importing of commodities from Russia, Germany, India, Switzerland, Britain, Brazil, the UAE, China, Spain, and France.

Despite the fact that the US has attempted to tighten the grip on Iran by imposing more sanction, Iranians have succeeded in keeping the growing trend of export and import via Chabahar.

Chabahar is located in a strategic point, playing the role of a bridge between eastern and western parts of the globe, so many countries have interests in maintaining the port active.

The development of Chabahar free trade zone, implementation of countrywide railway network, and establishment of an international airport in Chabahar county are among projects to prepare infrastructure needed for turning the region into an appropriate transit hub in order to increase trade ties with world markets.
