Tehran, IRNA - Hamedan, located on the slopes of Alvand mountain, is the oldest city in Iran, dating back to over 3,000 years ago, and the capital city of the Medes' kings, where had been the first site for political and administrative bodies in the ancient country.

The city has always survived different incidents and has been populated throughout its long history. Now, it is one of the metropolises of Iran.

Hamedan has been constantly a hub for the civilization of Iran and possesses a significant position in terms of culture and history, where was the first capital of the first dynasty in the country.

The city has been the birthplace of prominent figures and poets such as Rashid al-Din Fazlullah Hamedani, Seyed Jamaluddin Hosseini Asadabadi, Kaleem Kashani, Ain al-Ghozat Hamedani, Baba Taher Hamedani, Mirzadeh Eshghi Hamedani, and Moftoon Hamedani.

Nowadays, Hamedan is one of the most important five cities significant in terms of tourism and history monuments. The major tourist attractions of this city are the Ganj Nameh inscription, the Avicenna monument, and the Baba Taher monument. 

Since the tomb of Abu Ali Sina, a Persian polymath, is located in the city, his birth anniversary is being called the Day of Physician as well as Day of Hamedan.

Hossein Zandi, a journalist from Hamedan, told IRNA that the Day of Hamedan has been named after Day of Physician to commemorate Ibn Sina's birthday anniversary on Shahrivar 1 (August 23).

The Day of Hamedan is scheduled to be held virtually as a result of the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic throughout the country.

Zandi noted that an official ceremony was held each year to mark the Day of Hamedan in previous years, but journalists and tour guides proposed that the ceremony should be held unofficially to engage ordinary people.

The spectacular nature of the old city and its historic sites attract tourists. Hamedan is located around 360 kilometers southwest of Tehran, the capital city of Iran.

In 2006, the Iranian parliament announced that Hamedan is the "capital of history and civilization of Iran."

The Islamic Republic's Cultural Heritage Organization listed 207 sites of historical and cultural significance in the ancient city. The stolen Lion, the Saint Mary Church, the Tomb of Esther and Mordechai, the Dome of Mir Seyyed Ali Hamedani, Ali Sadr Cave, and Qorban Tower are among the outstanding sites in Hamedan province.
