Tehran, IRNA – A senior official in the Iranian Ministry of Petroleum said that devising a legal regime for petroleum extraction from joint oil fields can result in maximum extraction.

Reza Ashourizadeh who is the assistant Director General of Research and Technical Affairs Administration in the Ministry in an interview with IRNA on Saturday said that the joint oil fields and extraction projects from them are the main challenges and concerns of his ministry.

Iran has 28 joint fields with its neighbors, of which 18 are oil fields and four are gas fields. The rest are oil and gas fields.

Therefore, Iran is one of the few countries with this number of joint structures and the issue of exploiting joint fields is extremely important for Iran, he added.

Ashourizadeh said that out of these 28 joint fields, Iran and Iraq have 12 joint areas due to the long border,as saying that  7 joint structures with the United Arab Emirates, 2 joint reservoirs with Qatar and Oman, one joint field with Kuwait and Turkmenistan, and Esfandiar and Forouzan oil fields and Farzad gas field are joint with Saudi Arabia.

Lack of a legal regime to extraction from the joint fields has led to damage to the reservoirs with the aim of achieving maximum extraction and competition in production by both countries.
