Prime Minister said this during a meeting with Iranian Secretary General of ECO Dr Hadi Soleimanpour in Islamabad.
According to the statement, the Secretary General briefed the Prime Minister about background and activities of the ECO and underscored its importance as a regional economic organization aimed at enhanced regional social contacts, trade liberalization and greater connectivity.
He also expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for providing opportunity to apprise him of his ideals of an active and vibrant ECO.
He enumerated a few achievements of the Organization in the fields of educational and cultural exchanges between the Member-States and implementation of certain important agreements in other fields.
The Prime Minister appreciated the role of ECO and while discussing challenges faced by the Organization, ensured the Secretary General of full support of his government.
He hoped that under the supervision of Dr. Hadi the Organization will achieve its objectives. He also wished success for the Secretary General’s reform agenda.
Meanwhile, Dr Hadi Soleimanpour also called on Pakistan Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua at the Foreign Ministry and exchanged views on issues of mutual interest.
Dr Hadi Soleimanpour is visiting Pakistan from March 12-15, 2019. This is his first visit to Pakistan since he assumed the office as the Secretary General of the Organization.
ECO is a political and economic intergovernmental organization which was founded in 1984 in Tehran by the leaders of Iran, Pakistan, and Turkey.
Later it was joined by seven new members; Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
It provides a platform to discuss ways to improve development and promote trade and investment opportunities.
