Madrid, Oct 12, IRNA – A ceremony commemorating Iranian world-known scientist Avicenna was held in The Autonomous University of Madrid on Thursday.

Deputy Chairman of Tehran City Council Ahmad Masjed Jamei delivered a speech during the ceremony attended by a number of professors and Iranologists from various universities of Spain.

Commenting on the history of Iranian and Spanish scientists, he said the translation of the works of the Spanish scientists and authors including Cervantes and existence of thousands of Iranian and eastern manuscripts in Spanish universities indicate a deep and ancient bond between the Iranian and Spanish scientific centers.

He further noted that Avicenna is one of the Iranian thinkers who influenced the world of thought, as he highlighted theosophy and rationality in the being of mankind.

Instructors from various Spanish universities also delivered lectures on the works of the noted Iranian scientist.

Avicenna was a Persian polymath who is regarded as one of the most significant physicians, astronomers, thinkers and writers of the Islamic Golden Age.

He has been described as the father of early modern medicine. Of the 450 works he is known to have written, around 240 have survived, including 150 on philosophy and 40 on medicine.

His most famous works are ‘The Book of Healing’, a philosophical and scientific encyclopedia, and ‘The Canon of Medicine’, a medical encyclopedia which became a standard medical text at many medieval universities and remained in use as late as 1650.
