Tehran, Dec 11, IRNA - The objects discovered in the first season of exploration and identification of Mahmaleh district in the city of Khonj, Fars Province indicated that the city was highly important and very flourishing in the Islamic era.

The Public Relations Office of the Research Institute of Cultural Heritage and Tourism (RICHT), quoted Moslem Rezaei, head of the archeological team, as saying on Sunday that the first season of exploration and identification of Mahmaleh district in the city of Khonj in Larestan was conducted with the aim of preparing the archeological map and registering monuments qualified to be included in the list of national monuments.

“As a result of the exploration so far 85 historical-cultural works have been identified in the area,” he added.

“The identified works within the period of Neolithic Pottery and the first millennium BC (including Talle Khandaq, Kurdeh Village, Talle Gap, Baghan Village, Talle Kourki and the sextet sites of Garmasht Village) up to the present time,” he noted.

Rezaei went on to say that the identified works mostly belonged to the Islamic era, especially the Middle Islamic era which indicates the importance of the city in the Islamic period.
