Tehran, Oct 9, IRNA - The marriage age of men and women has increased significantly in Iran in the past 10 years, said the director general of Civil Registration Organization’s Office for Statistics, Population and Immigration.

Ali Akbar Mahzoun added that the average age of marriage for men and women stands at 27.8 and 23.1 years in Iran respectively, according to Thursday's edition of 'Iran Daily'.

He put the average age of marriage for women living in Tehran, Alborz and Semnan provinces at 25.1, 24.6 and 24.5 years respectively, which are highest in the country.

He noted that the average marriage age for men living in Tehran province is 29.2 years, which is the highest in the country followed by those of Alborz and Ilam provinces.

Mahzoun also said marriage age has increased twofold in Iran in recent years, adding that data show that the average marriage age for men is 20-30 years and for women 15-29 years.

He noted that the average age of marriage for men living in urban and rural areas is 27.9 and 26.2 years respectively, while the figure for urban and rural women stands at 23.5 and 21.4 years.

The official said the duties of all organizations affiliated to interior, health and cooperative ministries regarding population growth have been determined.

He said Civil Registration Organization is in charge of observing the process of population growth.

Mohammad Es’haqi, the deputy head of the Secretariat of the High Council of Cultural Revolution for planning, said earlier that the rising age of marriage and women’s tendency toward higher education are leading to a decline in the country’s fertility rate.

“The average age of marriage for girls, which was 19 years in 1956, presently stands at 24 years,” he said.

Es’haqi put the current fertility rate of Iran at 1.8, adding that if the new population strategies, adopted by the government, are implemented successfully, the figure will rise to 2.48 percent in the next two or three decades.
