Iran marks anniversary of war prisoners’ release from Iraq
Tehran, IRNA — The General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran has marked the anniversary of Iranian war prisoners’ release from Iraq, saying the country’s independence and honor is a result of the nation’s struggle for freedom.

Operation Mersad; July 27, 1988
After the acceptance of UN Security Council Resolution 598 and the end of Iraq’s war of aggression against Iran, the MKO terrorists launched the so-called Operation Forough Javidan (Eternal Light) in Iran with the aim of overthrowing the Islamic Republic. With the support of the Iraqi Ba’ath regime, the terrorist group infiltrated the Iranian territory and while advancing rapidly, committed war crimes and mercilessly killed innocent people.In response to this cowardly action, the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran carried out Operation Mersad on July 27, 1988. In this operation, more than 20 joint brigades of the MKO and the Iraqi army suffered a heavy defeat with more than 4,800 killed and wounded. Also, more than 120 tanks, 400 armored personnel carriers, and large amounts of enemy military equipment were destroyed.

Veterans of Iran’s war with Iraq remembered
The birth anniversary of Hazrat Al-Abbas is marked as the Day of Janbaz or the day of the veterans who lost a body part during Iran’s war with Iraq more than three decades ago. The occasion which falls on February 14 this year is celebrated annually on the 3rd of Sha’ban, the eighth month of the Islamic calendar. Hazrat Abbas was the son of Imam Ali (AS) and was famous for his courage, loyalty, and self-sacrifice.The following pictures, which are published for a first time by the IRNA, depict war heroes who were disabled during the Iraqi-imposed war on Iran in the 1980s.

Court hears lawsuit over 1988 US attack on Iranian frigates
Tehran, IRNA -- An Iranian court has convened to address the grievances of the families of martyrs of a US attack on Iranian naval vessels in the Persian Gulf in 1988 that resulted in the tragic loss of 56 service members.
