Eid al-Fitr, a time traditionally marked by joy and celebration, brought little relief to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip as the war-ravaged enclave continues to face intense bombardment and dwindling food supplies.
On Sunday, at least 20 Palestinians—many of them women and children—lost their lives in Israeli strikes across Gaza on the first day of Eid al-Fitr, according to Palestinian health officials.
The attacks targeted a tent encampment in the al-Mawasi area of southern Gaza, a region previously designated by Israel as a “humanitarian safe zone.”
The encampment, near Khan Younis and Deir el-Balah, shelters thousands of forcibly displaced Palestinians and is one of the most overcrowded areas in Gaza.
This marks the second consecutive year that Palestinian families have been unable to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, one of the most significant Muslim holidays that marks the end of Ramadan.
Israel resumed its military attacks earlier this month after ending a temporary ceasefire with Hamas. Over the past four weeks, Israeli strikes have killed hundreds of Palestinians while blocking food, fuel, and humanitarian aid from entering Gaza.
Since the war began, Israel’s bombardment and ground operations have devastated large parts of Gaza, displacing nearly 90% of the population.
