Saudi Arabia, the UAE distanced themselves from the U.S.'s maximum pressure against Iran: University professor
Professor Alam Saleh, senior lecturer in Iranian Studies at the Australian National University

An Australian National University professor says Israel alone is incapable of carrying out an effective attack on Iran, and the threat to destroy Iran's nuclear facilities is just a big bluff.

Professor of Middle East at Australian National University Alam Saleh says it should be noted that Israel alone is not capable of carrying out an effective attack on Iran, and the regime's threat of an attack to destroy Iran's nuclear facilities is just a big bluff.

Alam Saleh made the remarks in an exclusive interview with IRNA:

Q: The Israeli regime has launched a massive effort to convince the United States to join it in attacking Iran's nuclear facilities. To what extent do you think such a scenario fits into Trump's mindset? In parts of his speech, he has threatened that Iran will either agree or face a tougher choice.

A: Trump, due to his personal characteristics, is trying to avoid entering into war. This issue, which has traditionally and historically been one of the tools of pressure from the West, will make his job more difficult, although these threats, especially with regard to Iran, have so far not been met with a response. It should be noted that Israel alone is not capable of carrying out an effective attack against Iran and the threat of an attack to destroy Iran's nuclear facilities is just a big bluff.

Israel can only do this with the support of the United States; but the United States, along with Trump’s efforts to avoid war, has experienced numerous defeats from the weakest actors in West Asia. Clear examples of these defeats include Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen, and even Syria.

The Persian Gulf Arab states have concluded that the U.S.-Israeli problem with Iran was is a regional one, but rather a matter of Iranian power. In other words, countries like Saudi Arabia and the U.A.E. were paying a needless price for this confrontation, while the U.S. was always trying to contain and limit Iran without needing them.

Qatar’s Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani recently issued a strong warning that any attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities will have catastrophic consequences for the entire region.

Al Thani discussed the dangers of a military attack on Iran during an interview with Tucker Carlson, an American political commentator and TV presenter, on Friday.
He noted that an attack could lead to “an environmental disaster with no clean water to drink.”

The Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs has urged the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to oversee Israel’s nuclear facilities.

Meantime, Qatar has called for increased international efforts to place all Israeli nuclear facilities under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

In a statement on Sunday, the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged the UN nuclear watchdog to bring all of Israel’s nuclear facilities under its supervision.

Dr. Alam Saleh is Senior Lecturer in Iranian Studies at the Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies at the Australian National University.
