Hundreds of flights across Germany have been canceled as airport workers stage a nationwide strike over pay, causing significant disruptions for air travelers.
The industrial action, led by the trade union Verdi, began unexpectedly on Sunday at Hamburg Airport before escalating to a nationwide walkout, according to the BBC.
German media reports indicated that thousands of flights could be canceled throughout the day, affecting more than 500,000 passengers. The Lufthansa Group, which operates its main hub in Frankfurt, confirmed “delays and extensive cancellations” across all its airlines.
Munich Airport has warned of a “greatly reduced flight schedule,” with the majority of its 820 scheduled flights expected to be canceled. Similarly, Frankfurt Airport, one of Europe's busiest hubs, has already canceled many of its 1,770 planned flights. Airports in Stuttgart, Dusseldorf, Cologne, and Berlin are also anticipating hundreds of additional cancellations.
The strike has left travelers stranded and scrambling to rearrange their plans, with no immediate resolution in sight. Verdi, the union behind the strike, is demanding higher wages for airport workers amid rising inflation and cost-of-living pressures.
