The U.S. Secret Service says its agents have shot a man near the White House after what it called an armed confrontation.
The incident took place after midnight about a block west of the White House in Washington D.C., the agency said in a statement on Sunday, which was carried by American media.
It added that President Donald Trump was not in the White House at the time of the incident.
The agency said, a day earlier, it had received information from police about a “suicidal individual” who may have been traveling to Washington D.C. from Indiana.
The Secret Service’s officers encountered the suspect’s parked car at around midnight and saw a man matching his description, the agency said.
It added that as the officers approached, the man “brandished a firearm”, leading to “an armed confrontation.”
The man was transferred to an area hospital, and his condition is unknown, according to the statement. No one else was injured.
