Tehran, IRNA – The Swedish Foreign Ministry has summoned Iran’s ambassador to demand the release of an Iranian national who is imprisoned in Tehran on a conviction for espionage and who was given Swedish citizenship after arrest.
The ministry said in a statement on Friday that it had summoned the Iranian ambassador over what it called “worrying signals” about Ahmadreza Djalali who has been in jail since 2016 and sentenced to death.
The ministry said that it had demanded the release of Djalali so that he can join his family and requested his immediate access to medical care, according to AFP news agency citing the statement.
In mid-January, DJalali accused the Swedish government of not taking necessary action for his release.
In a message, which was sent to AFP by his wife Vida Mehrannia, DJalali said “It seems that my situation is not a priority for Swedish officials while I’m in danger of death or poor health.”
Back in June 2024, Tehran released two Swedes, Johan Floderus and Saeed Azizi, in exchange for the release of Iranian national Hamid Nouri who had been imprisoned over what Sweden had called human rights violations, a charge that Iran descried as politically motivated.
But DJalali, who has been given Swedish citizenship during his imprisonment, was not on the exchange list.
