Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says he appreciates the support extended by the United States in the war against Russia, but that he expects President Donald Trump to back Kiev “more firmly.”
The remark came a day after Zelensky had an extraordinarily heated exchange with Trump and Vice-President JC Vance at the White House, as he arrived in London for a defense summit with European leaders to discuss Ukraine’s future.
In a series of social media posts, Zelensky said, “I want the U.S. to stand more firmly on our side.”
He called for more security guarantees from the U.S., noting that his country was ready to sign a minerals agreement demanded by Trump for the support Washington has provided to Kiev during three years of military conflict with Russia.
“A ceasefire without security guarantees is dangerous for Ukraine,” Zelensky said, adding that the Ukrainian people need to know that the U.S. is on their side.
“It is very important for us that Ukraine is heard and that no one forgets about it, neither during the war nor after,” he said.
