UNSC discusses Iran’s retaliatory strikes on Israeli targets

New York, IRNA- The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has held an emergency session on Sunday local time at the request of the Zoinist regime after Iran’s retaliatory attacks against the regime in the occupied territories.

According to IRNA's reporter, the emergency meeting was held under theme "Middle East Situation" to review Iran's punitive action against the Israeli regime and ended without issuing any statement or resolution.

Following are the extracts from speeches delivered by representatives of several counties, including Security Council members.

UN chief: World can’t afford another war

In an opening speech, United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said that “neither the world nor the Middle East "can afford more war" and surely civilians will have to pay for yet another conflict as "violence begets violence."

While calling for "maximum restraint", the UN chief reiterated his condemnation of the Israeli attack on the premise of the Iranian embassy in Damascus.

"The Middle East is on the brink. The people of the region are confronting a real danger of a devastating full-scale conflict. Now is the time to defuse and de-escalate," he warned.

Russia slams hypocrisy, double standards

Russia's ambassador and representative to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, lashed out at the United States, Britain and France for refusing to abide by principles of international law, namely on the immunity of diplomatic facilities.

We had warned at the previous Security Council meeting that Israel's action should be condemned explicitly, but it was ignored and the US, Britain and France refused to accept a draft statement, Nebenzia said

Now the same countries are condemning Iran, and this shows "their hypocrisy," he clarified saying that "the result is now clear for everyone.”You know very well that an attack on a diplomatic center is an act of belligerence under international law, and if a Western mission was attacked, you would immediately react with revenge."

China: Iran's action reciprocal

The deputy representative of China at the United Nations condemned the Israeli regime’s attack on the Iranian embassy in Syria and said the deadly airstrike in violation of the UN charter prompted Iran to take retaliatory move.

By launching such an attack on April 1, he added, Tel Aviv violated the sovereignty of both Syria and Iran.

We are deeply concerned about Iran's action, but Tehran has emphasized that this was a retaliatory action and has ended now, this Chinese diplomat said.

Algeria: Israeli attack arbitrary

Algeria's deputy representative at the UN Security Council meeting on Sunday night blamed the Israeli regime for causing the situation to reach to this level, saying Iran's response was against Israeli attack on consulate in Damascus.

We warn against the dual policy (of America) and the policies should be the same for all countries, Ammar bin Jame said, adding that it is not possible to deal calmly if a country's territory is attacked first and then behave differently when aggressor is being responded.

We are at a crossroad, either we comply with international laws or we have face chaos, he added.

Syria: Iran's response legitimate

Syria's representative at the United Nations on Sunday night held the occupying Zionist regime and the US government responsible for regional escalation.

What Iran did yesterday was the correct exercise of its rights, it was in self-defense, Qusay Al-Dahhak said while referring to Israel’s deadly strike on Iran’s embassy in Damascus.

He added that the current events are the natural result of repeated aggressive actions and clear violations of international law and the United Nations Charter by the Israeli occupying regime in Syria and other countries, with the backing of the United States.

West justifies behavior of Zionist regime

Despite widespread criticisms at the Security Council meeting, the American, British and French representatives condemned Iran’s unprecedented attack against the Israeli targets in a clear display of double standards since the trio failed to issue a condemnation against Israeli attack on the Iranian embassy.

Robert Wood, US ambassador and deputy representative to the United Nations said the world body is obliged not to leave Iran's actions unanswered.

The United States will consider further measures to hold Iran accountable as the attack was against international peace, he said in disregard to the UN charter and the Vienna convention on diplomatic immunity.

The deputy representative of France aligned with the United States and condemned the unprecedented attack by Iran, saying “we and our partners in the region want to maintain the security of Israel”.

Barbara Woodward, British ambassador and representative to the United Nations, also claimed that Iran has a destabilizing role in the region and the attack on Israel was to create chaos in the region.

She called it unprovoked attack against the Zionist regime, forgetting the deadly Israeli attack that happened on Iranian diplomatic mission just this month.

Several other countries, including South Korea and Japan that have American or West-dictated foreign policy also sided with the Zionist regime by condemning Iran’s retaliatory strikes.
