‘Iran had no choice but to punish Zionist regime’

Tehran, IRNA - In a telephone conversation with the European Union foreign policy chief, the top Iranian diplomat made it clear on Sunday that his country had no other option but to punish the Zionist regime for its aggression within the framework of Iran’s legitimate defense.

According to IRNA, Hossein Amirabdollahian told Josep Borrell that the Iranian action was in the backdrop of diplomatic inaction of the United Nations and the Security Council in issuing even a single statement condemning the Israeli attack on Iran’s diplomatic mission in Syria.

Amirabdollahian also pointed to the repeated aggression of the Zionist regime, including the targeting of Iranian military personnel who are in an advisory mission to fight against terrorism in Syria.

The Israeli attack on the diplomatic premise of our country in Damascus was a clear violation of the Vienna Convention and had crossed the Islamic Republic's red line, he underlined.

While stressing the success of Iran’s military action, the Iranian foreign minister said the message regarding the end of operation has been delivered but warned that the response of the Islamic Republic will be immediate, wide and maximal in case of countermeasures by the Zionist regime.

He also expressed hope that the European Union will take an effective and efficient initiative to end the Israeli genocide in Gaza and expressed Tehran’s readiness to help the bloc in this regard.

Borell, for his part, affirmed that Iran's military response was not far from expectation but expressed his satisfaction that the operation has finally ended.

From the point of view of the European Union, the attack on the consular section of the Iranian Embassy in Damascus was in violation of the Vienna Convention, he noted.

He further announced the diplomatic efforts of the European Union to resolve the crisis in Gaza and end the suffering of Palestinians and asked Iran to help achieve this with restraint.
