No consensus achieved on full UN membership for Palestine: Report

Tehran IRNA — President of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for April Vanessa Frazier says that the members of the Council have failed to reach a consensus on Palestine’s application for full UN membership.

Frazier, who is the permanent representative of Malta to the United Nations, made the remarks on Thursday on the admission of new members in the global body.

There was no consensus in this regard, Frazier commented on the request by the Palestine who is currently a non-member observer state at the UN.

The majority of the member states agree to full Palestinian membership, she underlined.

Last week, the Palestinian Authority asked for renewed consideration by the Security Council of its 2011 application to become a full member of the world body, Al Jazeera has reported.

For any country to become a full member of the UN, the international body’s charter says the country’s membership must first be approved by the UNSC.

Then it would need to get the support of two-thirds of the members of the UN General Assembly.
