South Korean spy satellite placed in orbit

Tehran, IRNA - South Korea's second military spy satellite that was launched from a US space center has successfully entered Earth's orbit.

The Ministry of Defense of South Korea in a statement cited by the national broadcaster said that the satellite separated from its launcher at 9:20 a.m. Monday (local time) and placed in the intended orbit, according to IRNA's report.

The military spy satellite was launched on Sunday afternoon aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from the John F. Kennedy Space Center, Florida.

The South Korean military has so far launched two spy satellites based on a project initiated in 2018 with the aim of strengthening the country’s surveillance capabilities.

This is despite the fact that similar launched North Korea in the past had met with widespread protest from South Korea, Japan and the United States.

North Korea considers the United States as the key factor behind regional tensions, especially on the Korean peninsula.
