Russia circulates UNSC draft statement condemning Israeli strike on Iran consulate

Moscow, IRNA – Russia has circulated a UN Security Council draft statement condemning the Israeli regime’s attack on the Iranian consulate in Syria, according to Russian First Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Dmitry Polyansky.

In a statement published on the Telegram messaging app, Polyansky said his country circulated the draft statement to the media after discussions based on an agreement with Iran and Syria, TASS reported on Wednesday.

“This is another opportunity to test the real intentions of our Western colleagues. We’ll see how work on the document goes,” he said.

The Russian diplomat lamented that the UN Secretariat “failed to either condemn or make a direct assessment of” the Zionist regime’s actions. “The Western ‘trio’ was talking about anything but the airstrike on the diplomatic facility,” he added.

“[We] stressed that if the situation continues to escalate, the US, the United Kingdom and France would be to blame as they could not bring themselves to condemn Israel’s attack.”

Israeli warplanes bombed the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria, on Monday, killing two senior Iranian commanders who were on an advisory mission in the Arab country as well as five of their accompanying officers.

Iran warned on Tuesday that the consequences of the regime’s reprehensible act could lead to the escalation in tensions and potentially spark more conflicts in the region.
