Taliban rejects US claims of inability to deal with threat of extremists

Kabul, IRNA - The spokesperson of the Afghan caretaker government has rejected claims by the top US general in the region that the Taliban is unable to contain the threat of extremist groups in Afghanistan.

“We reject such claims because Afghanistan is now secure and one unified government controls the entire geographical area of this country,” Zabihullah Mujahid told IRNA’s correspondent in Kabul on Monday.

The comment was in response to US Army General Michael E. Kurilla, commander of CENTCOM, who accused the Taliban of being unable to curb extremist groups.

“I assess ISIS-Khorasan retains the capability and will to attack US and Western interests abroad in as little as six months and with little to no warning,” Kurilla told a Senate hearing this week.

Mujahid said the ruling administration in Kabul will not allow Afghanistan soil to be used as launching ground for attacks against other countries.

“No outside group is allowed to operate in the territory of Afghanistan,” he stressed.
