President Raisi hails Algeria’s role in fighting imperialism

Tehran, IRNA - Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi has praised the pivotal role of Algeria in fighting imperialism and hegemony during a state visit to the North African country.

“The regional policy of Algeria is aimed at elevating the peace and security of the region and we see this policy in a positive light,” President Raisi said on Sunday in Algiers in a meeting of delegations from Iran and Algeria.

Raisi, who is in Algeria for the 7th summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), was officially welcomed by Algerian President Abdelmajid Tebboune at the presidential palace in Algiers.

At the meeting of delegations, the Iranian president underscored the robust political ties and cultural exchanges between the two nations, and called for a boost in economic and trade relations.

He expressed hope that his visit to Algeria would mark a turning point in opening new avenues for expanding bilateral trade and economic cooperation.

Furthermore, President Raisi commended the shared outlook of Iran and Algeria on various regional issues, particularly in combating terrorism.

The Algerian leader thanked Raisi for attending the GECF summit and said the two sides had reached important agreements, during a private discussion earlier in the day, to strengthen various areas of bilateral relations.   

Earlier in the day, the Iranian president visited a memorial site for the martyrs of the Algerian Revolution and paid tribute to the martyrs.

A former French colony, Algeria fought for its independence for more than 130 years which culminated in a major armed conflict with the French Army from 1954 to 1962, when Algeria won its independence.
