Iran’s envoy felicitates Shahbaz Sharif on election victory

Tehran, IRNA - Iran’s Ambassador to Islamabad Reza Amiri Moghaddam has congratulated Shahbaz Sharif as the new prime minister of Pakistan.

In a congratulatory message on his user account on X social network, Amiri Moghaddam said “I would like to express my warmest congrats on election of Shahbaz Sharif as the 24th Pakistan PM following a successful election".

He added, “Iran expresses readiness to expand all-out mutual relations, ties, and cooperation."

“I wish peace, security & stability for the years to come for our brotherly country of Pakistan,” he further noted.

Sharif, 72, who was the consensus candidate of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), received 201 votes in the 336-member house.

Sharif secured 201 votes, prevailing over rival Omar Ayub Khan, who won 92 votes and is backed by the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), the political group legislators belonging to former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party joined after the PTI was barred from contesting for allegedly violating election laws.

Currently serving as the PMLN president, Sharif had the backing of nearly 200 legislators in the 336-member house. The winner needed at least 169 votes.
