The call was made by South Africa’s Ambassador to the Netherlands Vusimuzi Madonsela who also urged the world to testify on the punishment of the Israeli regime over its genocide in Gaza.
South Africa brought the genocide case before the ICJ, based in The Hague, the Netherlands, in January. Later in the month, the top UN court ordered the occupying regime to stop its genocide in Gaza, among several measures.
The court, meanwhile, is also hearing arguments in another case on Israel’s decades-long occupation of Palestinian land, following a request by the UN General Assembly more than a year ago. The proceedings began on February 19 and will conclude this coming Monday.
More than 50 countries and several regional blocs, including the African Union and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) argue before the 15-judge bench at the United Nations’ top court.
South Africa’s representative, Madonsela, addressed the court during the second hearing held on Tuesday (Feb. 20), when he called Israel’s policies toward Palestinians an “extreme form of apartheid”.
“As South Africans, we feel, see, hear, and feel deep within ourselves the inhumane discriminatory policies and practices of the Israeli regime, which constitute an even more extreme form of institutionalized apartheid against black people in my country,” Madonsela said.
