US veto of Gaza ceasefire resolution ‘shameful’: CAIR

Tehran, IRNA - The Council on American-Islamic Relations called the US veto of a Gaza ceasefire resolution in the United Nations shameful, urging President Joe Biden not to act like a defense lawyer of Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu.

Nihad Awad, the executive director of the Council on American–Islamic Relations criticized the Biden administration and its policy, in a statement, quoted by Al Jazeera on Wednesday morning.

"The action of the United States in vetoing the ceasefire resolution in the UN Security Council is shameful," statement said, adding that Biden should stop acting like Netanyahu's lawyer and act like the President of the United States.

The director America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization also urged citizens to contact the White House and their elected representatives to oppose the government's support for the Israeli war crimes and ask them to seek a ceasefire, access to humanitarian aid in Gaza.

This council in its previous statement had also called on the US government to help establish an immediate and permanent ceasefire to end ethnic cleansing and starvation of Palestinians.

“While the Biden administration is preventing all efforts to end the genocide in Gaza, people are being slaughtered every day in various ways. This is one of the darkest times in human history”, the Council on American-Islamic Relations said.

Remarks came hours after the United States once again vetoed the resolution proposed to establish an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

The motion presented by Algeria on behalf of a group of Arab countries in the United Nations, despite receiving 13 positive votes from the 15-member council, the US vetoed it while the UK abstained.

This is the third time that the proposed resolution to establish a ceasefire in Gaza has been vetoed by the United States.
