"We can confirm that an American Air Force MQ-9 plane crashed on the coast of Hodeidah," the official, who did not want to be named, was quoted by Reuters in the early hours of Tuesday.
This American official however said that the US Air Force is investigating the cause of the downing of the drone.
A footage showed the wreckage of the downed unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) on the shore of the Red Sea.
Earlier, the Yemen military claimed to have downed a US-made MQ-9 Reaper attack drone, which it said “was carrying out hostile missions against the country on behalf of the Zionist entity”.
In November, the Pentagon had acknowledged the shooting down of a similar drone over the Red Sea.
The drone came down just hours after the Yemeni army confirmed targeting yet another British cargo ship off the country’s west coast.
Since the start of the Israeli war on Gaza in October last year, the Yemeni armed forces have been targeting Israeli-bound or owned ships in the Red Sea. But recently, they have hit several American and British vessels in response to the two countries’ aggression against Yemen and their support for the ongoing Israeli crimes in the Gaza Strip.
