Iran’s HDI climbs 34 steps since Islamic revolution

Tehran, IRNA – Iran has climbed 34 steps in the global Human Development Index (HDI) since the victory of the Islamic revolution in 1979, becoming one of the countries in the world with high human development.

According to a 2022 report from the United Nations Development Programme, which was prepared on the basis of information gathered in 2021, Iran’s HDI grew by 77% in the years after the victory of the Islamic Revolution.

The index shows the level of justice and social, economic, health and cultural welfare of each country and includes a figure from zero to one, with the higher figure indicating the greater human development of that country.

According to the UNDP report, Iran's human development index was 0.437 a year before the Islamic revolution. That was gradually increased to 0.552 in 1990, to 0.652 in 2000, and to 0.652 in 2000. It reached 0.681 in 2005, 0.725 in 2010, and 0.774 in 2021.

With the increase in HDI, Iran's global ranking has been improved in this regard. In 1979, Iran was ranked 110th among 182 countries in terms of human development. In 2021, the country was promoted to the 76th rank among 191 countries.

Accordingly, the Islamic Republic climbed up 34 steps in the global HDI ranking which was higher than 115 countries worldwide in 2021.

The UNDP report classifies world states into four groups with very high human development, high human development, medium human development and low human development.
