Israel, US block Palestine from 2024 disarmament conference

Tehran, IRNA -- The Israeli regime and its staunch ally, the United States, have blocked a bid by Palestine to acquire an observer status at the 2024 Conference on Disarmament.

More than 20 countries explicitly expressed their support for the Palestinian people at a public plenary of the 2024 conference. But the Israeli regime and the US once again stood in the way of Palestinians having an active part in the international community, IRNA reported on Wednesday.

It was the fourth such public plenary held to determine which non-member states will be participating in the Conference on Disarmament as an observer state. The conference itself will be held from February 26 to March 1.

“The Islamic Republic gives a premium to multilateralism in the works of the Conference on Disarmament and welcomes the participation of non-member states in its sessions,” said Mehdi Aliabadi, Iran's ambassador and deputy permanent representative to the UN Geneva Office.

The Palestinian government, as an observer state at the United Nations and a member state of various international documents in the field of disarmament, has the right to apply for participation in sessions of the disarmament conference, he noted.

The Iranian official further condemned the "double-standard" approach by governments that “hypocritically back collectivism and multilateralism” for their efforts to block Palestine’s participation in the conference.
