US failed miserably as Iran not afraid of it: Senator Graham

Tehran, IRNA – Hawkish US Republican Senator Lindsey Graham criticized the administration of President Joe Biden on Sunday night that its policies toward Iran has not been effective as the Islamic Republic is not afraid of America.

During an interview with Fox News, Graham rebuked the US government for its overall policies in West Asia.

"If the goal is to create deterrence against Iran, you have failed miserably and if the goal is to protect American troops in the region, you have not achieved it either”, he warned.

The South Carolina senator also called for a change in policies to make others afraid without naming any countries, adding that hitting hundreds of targets is not important, a reference to the recent US airstrikes on Iraq and Syria in what Washington called were in response to a deadly attack on an American base in Jordan.

“If you have convinced Iran that you are not looking for a large-scale war, they have believed and received this message but they are not afraid of us,” he reacted to repeated statements issued by American officials that the country was not looking for a conflict or war with Iran.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Saturday that dozens of positions in Syria and Iraq were targeted in retaliation for the killing of three American soldiers in the northeast of Jordan.

The US faced widespread criticism and denunciations over these attacks, including from Iraqi and Syrian governments that called the aggression a breach of their sovereignty.

Republicans in the United States, however, considered those measures insufficient.

Alaska State Senator Dan Sullivan wrote on his social media post that the response was "disastrous and close to dangerous."

Separately, Arkansas State Senator Tom Cotton and Nebraska State Senator Deb Fisher both doubted that bombings on targets in Iraq and Syria would be successful in the long term.
