On Sunday, Branch 55 of the Tehran Court of Justice, specialized in international litigations, heard a lawsuit filed by families of the victims of the unprovoked attack by the United States on Iranian frigates Sahand, Sabalan, and Joshan.
The court session focused on the events of April 18, 1988, during Operation Praying Mantis, where US forces targeted Iranian naval assets in the Persian Gulf, in line with Washington's support for then-Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein’s regime in its war against Iran.
The presiding judge disclosed that 98 individuals are seeking justice in this case, comprising 45 family members of martyrs from the Sahand frigate, 7 family members of martyrs from Sabalan, and 22 individuals who were injured in the US terrorist attack.
The judge emphasized that the Tehran Court of Justice has the authority to hear the lawsuit, citing Iranian law that empowers the country’s courts to seek justice for Iranian nationals affected by the hostile actions of foreign governments.
Addressing the court, the defense attorney representing the plaintiffs asserted that the US attack aimed to exert pressure on Iran to end the war with Iraq and preserve the Saddam regime.
