Iran slams US for using sanctions as a tool against other nations

Tehran, IRNA -- Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani has reacted to a recent US move to re-impose sanctions on Venezuela and condemned Washington for using sanctions as a tool to put pressure on other countries.

Kanaani said on Thursday that resorting to such measures is a direct interference in the internal affairs of countries and a violation of the United Nations Charter.

The continued use of those measures would only enhance determination and cooperation of independent countries to resist such interventionist policies, he added.

Kanaani went on to say that using sanctions as a weapon against other countries is contrary to the rights of governments and nations, human rights, and international law.

The US this week re-imposed sanctions on Venezuela after the Latin American country’s top court upheld a ban barring the leading opposition hopeful from running in a presidential election later this year.

As part of the re-imposed measures, the US said that it would not renew a license that has allowed Venezuela’s oil to freely flow to its chosen destinations over the past several months.

Caracas has condemned “the rude and improper blackmail and ultimatum expressed by the US government”, and warned against consequences of “taking the wrong step of intensifying the economic aggression against Venezuela.”
