Iran FM spox slams NATO chief's baseless accusations against Iran

Tehran, IRNA – Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani has condemned the unfounded allegations made by Secretary-General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Jens Stoltenberg, against Iran.

In reaction to the baseless accusations made against Iran on Tuesday, Kanaani described the remarks by the NATO chief as “a bitter joke”. He noted that NATO and some of its members have a dark history of colonialism, plotting and implementing destructive and interventionist policies, as well as military actions in West Asia and other parts of the world. Kanaani also said that NATO is the main cause of instability and insecurity, not only in the region but also throughout the world.

Kanaani reiterated that the fundamental policies of the Islamic Republic of Iran have always been based on strengthening ties with neighbors within the framework of good neighborliness and mutual respect. He emphasized that trying to materialize a stable, safe, and prosperous region, and prevention of foreign interference are among the lasting principles of Iranian policy.

On Tuesday morning, Stoltenberg accused the Islamic Republic of Iran of having a destabilizing role in the West Asian region. He leveled baseless accusations, claiming that “Iran bears responsibility for backing terrorists who attack our ships in the Red Sea”.
