US not looking for war with Iran: Top American military official

Tehran, IRNA- A top US military official said on Sunday night that his country is not looking or a war with Iran, adding the Islamic Republic as a regional power does not want it either.

ABC News quoted Charles Brown, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff as saying that the United States is trying to create a delicate balance between its goals of deterrence in the Middle East while protecting the American military.

"Our goal is to deter and protect American forces, not to enter into a full-scale conflict or war," he said.

While pointing to the US policy toward Iran, Brown said: Of course, Tehran is looking for the withdrawal of our troops from Iraq but we will respond if a wider conflict occurs in the region”.

“But we must proceed with caution if we have to enter a wider conflict,” he further underlined.

The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff reacted to increasing attacks on American bases and facilities by resistance groups.  “We have to think about our approach in this field and we cannot predict exactly how each of these groups will react to our actions”.

Brown also touched on US airstrikes on Yemen over the Arab country’s anti-Israel operations in the Red Sea, claiming that those airstrikes have affected the ability of the Yemeni armed forces to continue attacks on ships.

"But right now, I cannot talk about the extent of this effect," he noted.

The US military official acknowledged his country’s comprehensive support for Israel in its war on Gaza but warned against the loss of civilian lives there.

“I am in regular contact with my Israeli counterpart to emphasize the importance of preventing civilian casualties and the need to continue the flow of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip,” he added.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the US House Armed Services Committee has said that Iran is not looking for a conflict with Washington.

Adam Smith, in response to the recent attack on the US military base in Jordan, said an appropriate response should be given to this attack, adding however that “it does not appear that Iran directly ordered the attack”.

"I don't think Iran is looking to escalate the tension with the United States", Smith stressed.

The United States has been facing harsh condemnations at home and abroad for its support for the regime’s genocidal war on Palestinians in Gaza by providing the Zionist regime with weapons and money.
