Foreign Ministry holds 7th conf. on history of Iran’s foreign relations

Tehran, IRNA – The Iranian Foreign Ministry has held the seventh conference on the history of the country’s foreign relations here in the capital Tehran.

The conference, dubbed “The History of Iran’s Foreign Relations: Multilateralism in History of Iran’s Foreign Relation History”, was held at the ministry’s office of international and political studies on Sunday.

Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian addressed the gathering, describing the conference as a key opportunity where researchers can present their newest viewpoints, which he said is valuable for the Foreign Ministry.

The minister said that this year’s conference focuses on multilateralism due to its importance in global diplomacy.

Amirabdollahian said that multilateralism in Iran’s foreign relations dates back to years before the 19th century, with different Iranian dynasties practicing multilateralism in dealing with the external problems they had faced.

As far as international organizations are concerned, Iran has also had an active presence in those bodies and has tried to use them to help resolve crises, the Iranian foreign minister further said.

He noted that the main purpose behind multilateral mechanisms is to create equal opportunities for all those involved in dealing with issues. But, Amirabdollahian added, those mechanisms would turn into a threat against collective peace and security if they are used by certain parties as a tool to exercise more power.

The top diplomat meanwhile criticized Western states for their blind support of the Israeli regime in its crimes against Palestinians in Gaza, saying that their practice has ruined achievements in multilateralism.
