Winter storms claim scores of lives in US

Tehran, IRNA- Snow and storms have claimed nearly 90 lives as deep freeze affecting millions of people across the United States.

According to US media reports, cold snap-related casualties include at least 25 people in Tennessee and 16 Oregon, which is still in a state of emergency due to severe frost.

Tens of thousands of people are also without power across the United States.

Severe weather events which began over the past week in some 10 states from south to Pacific north-west are expected to continue until the middle of the next week.

While the highest tolls were recorded in the states of Tennessee and Oregon, deaths were also reported in Illinois, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, Washington, Kentucky, Wisconsin, New York, New Jersey and other parts of the US, CBS news reported.

Last Wednesday, in an incident in Portland, Oregon, three people were electrocuted and died when a power line fell due to strong winds and hit their car. A child who was also in the car said to survive the accident.

While power has largely been restored in areas affected by the storm, tens of thousands of people across the country are still without electricity.

As of Sunday afternoon, nearly 10,000 people were without power in Oregon, 8,000 in North Carolina, 7,000 in California and 4,300 in Kentucky, according to reports.
