Security of international waterways Iran’s strategy: VP

Tehran, IRNA - Iranian First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber has said the preservation of the security of international waterways is a fundamental strategy of the Islamic Republic.

He made the remarks at a meeting with Eritrean Foreign Minister Osman Saleh Mohammed on the sidelines of the 19th summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

During the meeting, Eritrea’s top diplomat gave Mokhber a written message from the country’s president to be delivered to President Ebrahim Raisi of Iran.

Mokhber stressed the necessity of greater convergence among Red Sea coastal countries to counter the aggression of the United States and some Western countries in the region.

Tensions have escalated in the Red Sea following a series of coordinated attacks by the US and UK against Yemen, supposedly in response to Yemeni strikes targeting Israeli-linked ships traversing the strategic waterway.

Iran’s vice president praised Eritrea's firm support for the oppressed people of Palestine, considering it crucial amid the silence and inaction of international organizations.

Osman Saleh Mohammed, for his part, emphasized his country's interest in elevating relations with Iran to a strategic level.
