Iran denies sanctions are preventing Umrah pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia

Tehran, IRNA - The Civil Aviation Organization of the Islamic Republic of Iran (CAA) has rejected that sanctions are the reasons for preventing Iranian Muslims from making the Umrah pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.

In an interview with IRNA on Saturday, CAA’s spokesman Jafar Yazarlou said that the technical problems preventing Iranian Muslims from making the Umrah pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia are due to some agreements between the Civil Aviation Organization of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Saudi Arabia, which are being negotiated.

He expressed hope that the technical problems will soon be resolved by the two sides.

The existing technical problem is not related to political, or financial issues between Tehran and Riyadh, he underlined.

He added that the sanctions are not the reason for preventing Iranian Muslims from making the Umrah pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, noting that such issues are baseless and not true.

Earlier, Iran's flagship carrier Iran Air said that all flights scheduled to carry Iranian Umrah pilgrims to Saudi Arabia were canceled as Saudi authorities had not issued permissions for them.

Iran and Saudi Arabia agreed to resume Hajj pilgrimage for Iranians as part of a rapprochement deal in March.
