Iran FM hails SCO, BRICS role in Tehran-New Delhi cooperation

Tehran, IRNA – Iranian Foreign Minister has stressed that Iran’s membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and BRICS group of developing countries have given a boost to strategic cooperation between Tehran and New Delhi.

Hossein Amirabdollahian made the remarks in a joint press conference after meeting in Tehran on Monday with his Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.

He also hailed India’s role in Iran’s bid for membership in SCO and BRICS.

Amirabdollahian highlighted the significance of the visit to Tehran by the Indian foreign minister which he said is a major step in expansion of bilateral cooperation in different areas.

He added that he and his Indian counterpart discussed a wide range of issues, including economic issues and strategic connections with special focus on the development of Chabahar Port in southeastern Iran and the International North-South Transit Corridor (INSTC).

The two foreign ministers also reviewed the catastrophic situation in Gaza, urging the need for finding an end to the war and preventing the spread of the conflicts, Amirabdollahian further stated.

Iran has always underlined the need for preventing the spread of war and stressed the significance of shipping in the region, the foreign minister said, adding that in a visit to Iran two weeks ago, a high-ranking Yemeni official made sure that they would not interrupt the security of shipping.

He, however, cited the Yemeni official that that they would prevent the passage of Israel-linked ships and the ships that are bound for Israel as well as the War in Gaza continues.

Speaking in the meantime, the Indian foreign minister said that India is willing to make use of Iran’s regional position which he believed would provide his country with access to the north.

Noting that the two countries share views about the development of Iran’s Chabahar Port, Jaishankar said that they have drawn a good roadmap for the coming years and they should access the progress of these projects.

He also referred to the massacre of civilian people in Gaza and said that both Iran and India are concerned about the developments in West Asia.

The Indian foreign minister also voiced concern about threats to shipping which he said have affected India’s energy and economic interests.
