German tourist warmly welcomed in northwestern Iranian village

Mahabad, IRNA – Residents of the northwestern Iranian village of Zegdraw have been hosting a tourist from Germany for over three weeks, helping her to feel at home.

Petra Schuermann, 64, was touring the Iranian cities but technical failure in her car made her stay in the village, located 15 kilometers east of Mahabad in northwestern Iranian province of West Azarbaijan, IRNA said on Saturday.

According to her remarks, she began her tour of Turkey, Iraq and Iran about three and a half years ago.

Schuermann has visited parts of the three countries in the Middle East region, but failure in her car caused her to stay in Zegdraw after touring the cities of Tabriz and Orumiyeh, Sanandaj and Kermanshah in northwest and west of Iran.

About her stay in the Iranian village, Schuermann said she is waiting to receive some spare parts for her car from Germany to repair it in order to continue her tour of other areas across Iran.

In her interview with the IRNA correspondent, the German tourist described the people in the village as so “helpful”, saying she was amazed by the hospitality of the villagers when she was invited to their homes or to their wedding parties.

She said she will write memories of her stay in the Middle East in a book in the future.

One of the residents in the village said that local women had become interested in learning foreign languages, especially German and English, since Schuermann settled in Zegdraw.

West Azarbaijan enjoys various natural tourist attractions and historical sites.
