Iran's permanent representative in Geneva took to the X social media network to back “South Africa's initiative in filing a lawsuit against the crimes of the apartheid Israeli regime in Palestine under the Generation Convention”. “The international community should support South Africa's efforts to bring the perpetrators of the crime to justice”, the statement added.
On Wednesday, the Iranian foreign ministry also issued a statement on the ICJ case, saying the Israeli regime has committed a raft of crimes in flagrant violation of international conventions.
“Iran once again strongly denounces the apartheid Zionist regime’s war crimes and genocide against the Palestinian nation, and expresses its support for resistance as a liberation move and legitimate right recognized by international law for the Palestinian nation in the struggle against occupation,” the statement read.
The ministry also voiced Iran’s support for South Africa’s “responsible, courageous and honorable” move, which it said was based upon international law in defense of the Palestinian nation.
The International Court of Justice has announced that South Africa’s complaint is against Israel for violating the Genocide Convention, which the Israeli foreign ministry has described as baseless.
Iran is among several countries that have so far hailed South Africa’s lawsuit at the top UN court in The Hague. Bangladesh, Bolivia, Jordan, Malaysia, the Maldives, Namibia, Nicaragua, Pakistan have already welcomed the initiative which is based on the fact that the Zionist regime's war was aimed at ethnic cleansing in Gaza.
