Karzai urges strengthening bilateral ties between Iran, Afghanistan

Tehran, IRNA – Former president of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai has called for bolstering bilateral relations between Iran and Afghanistan.

Hamid Karzai made the remarks during a meeting with Iran’s Special Envoy for Afghanistan Hassan Kazemi Qomi in Kabul, the former president of Afghanistan wrote in his account on the X, formerly known as Twitter, cited by the IRNA on Wednesday.

During the meeting, Karzai condemned the Kerman terrorist attack and expressed condolences and sympathized with the Iranian government and nation over the martyrdom of a number of Iranians in the Kerman terrorist attacks.

The Kerman terrorist attacks took place after two explosions ripped through a route leading to the burial site of Iran’s anti-terror icon, General Qassem Soleimani, as people had gathered to mark the fourth anniversary of his assassination by the US.

Referring to the discussion with Kazemi Qomi about UN Security Council Resolution 2721 on Afghanistan and the situation in the region, Karzai added that Afghanistan needs a national understanding to ensure permanent peace and stability.

Calling for strengthening and expanding relations between the two countries, he described Tehran’s role and cooperation as significant at various levels with Kabul and urged continuing cooperation with Iran.

Earlier today, Kazemi Qomi met and held talks with the Acting Foreign Minister of Afghanistan's ruling Taliban government Amir Khan Muttaqi.
