Iraq seeks quick exit of US forces: PM

Tehran, IRNA – Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has said Baghdad asks the United States to end its military presence in Iraq amid mounting tensions over the ongoing Gaza war.

Al-Sudani told Reuters that his country seeks a quick and orderly negotiated exit of US-led forces of the Arab state, describing the military presence as a source of destabilization when the region is facing spillover from the onslaught in Gaza.

The Iraqi PM said, “There is a need to reorganize this relationship so that it is not a target or justification for any party, internal or foreign, to tamper with stability in Iraq and the region.”

Emphasizing the need for a process of understanding and dialogue for the withdrawal of the US-led forces from Iraq, he called for setting an honest time frame to guarantee the quick withdrawal of foreign boots and put an end to clashes between American and resistance forces.

The calls for the pullout of US-led coalition forces from Iraq have been amplified recently as a result of American strikes on the positions of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, which inflicted casualties upon those fighters, who tried to force the US to stop backing the Israeli aggression.

According to the Iraqi official, the cessation of hostility in Gaza seems to be the only solution and if not the area of confrontation would expand in the sensitive region.

Pentagon declared on Monday that the US does not plan to pull out its forces from Iraq, claiming that they are in the Arab country at the invitation of the Iraqi government, while Baghdad authorities have time and again urged Washington to end the military presence.
